When an event is full and the host has turned on the waitlist, joining puts you in a queue in the order people arrived.
If a place opens up, the person at the front is moved to Going automatically and told. You do not need to keep checking.
If the host turns the waitlist off, everyone still queued is released and told. That is not a rejection, and you are free to join again if room appears.
